How to Create an Efficient Electric Home

Tim Forcey trained as a chemical engineer and spent years working in oil and gas before walking away from fossil fuels in 2010.
Today he’s one of Australia’s best-known home-energy advisers — the founder of the 165,000+ followers strong “My Efficient Electric Home” facebook community and author of the bestselling handbook by the same name. He has now advised in hundreds of homes, mostly around Melbourne.
I sat down with Tim to talk about what he’s learned making Australian homes warmer, healthier and cheaper to run — and how much of it applies directly to New Zealand. It’s a warm, funny, myth-busting conversation with a simple message: comfort is what gets people to act, and the cheapest, healthiest way to deliver it is to electrify.

- Electrify in stages — the savings stack up. Heat-pump heating, a hot water heat pump, induction cooking, solar, battery, then an EV. Tim’s staged switch saves him around AU$3,000 a year.

Tim Forcey is a Melbourne-based home comfort and energy adviser, researcher and author, and one of Australia’s leading voices on home electrification. He trained as a chemical engineer and worked around the world in petrochemicals, oil and gas before leaving the fossil fuel industry around 2010. He went on to research home energy economics at the University of Melbourne — work that helped establish that heating with a reverse-cycle air conditioner costs roughly a third as much as gas.
He founded and runs the “My Efficient Electric Home” (MEEH) Facebook community, one of the largest of its kind, and as a qualified home-energy advisor has now advised in hundreds of homes, mainly across Melbourne and Victoria. He is a speaker and the author of the bestselling My Efficient Electric Home Handbook (Murdoch Books, 2024).
