How Much Does a Hot Water Heat Pump Cost in NZ?

What you'll pay
A fully installed hot water heat pump in New Zealand costs between $5,800 and $10,700 for an integrated (all-in-one) system including supply, installation, old cylinder removal, plumbing, and electrical connection. Split systems can range from $6,700 to $13,000+ for a full system, less if you're retrofitting to an existing cylinder.
That's more than a standard electric cylinder ($3,000 installed) or a new instant gas system ($3,500 installed) but significantly less than you'll pay in running costs over the system's lifetime. A heat pump uses 60–75% less electricity than a conventional cylinder — the upfront premium pays for itself within 5–8 years, and then you save money every year for the remaining 5-10 years of the system's life.

What's included in hot water heat pump installation costs?
When an installer quotes you a fully installed price, it should include everything you need. Here's the typical breakdown.

What might cost extra
Switchboard upgrade
Older switchboards may not have capacity for a new dedicated circuit. For a new circuit : $300–$800. For a new switchboard: $1,500 or more.
Relocating the hot water system
Moving from an indoor cupboard to an outdoor location adds plumbing runs. Extra cost: $500–$2,000+.
Gas disconnection
If switching from gas, disconnecting the gas supply can cost $100–$300 via your gas retailer.
Concrete pad or base
Integrated units need a solid, level outdoor base. Concrete pad if needed: about $500.
Extended pipe runs
Split systems with long distances between outdoor unit and cylinder add cost: $300–$800+.
Building consent (rare)
Most residential installations don't require consent, but check with your local council if in doubt.
Running costs — what you'll pay each year
Based on 3,400 kWh/yr hot water demand (EECA). Electricity at 30c/kWh. Solar blend at 12c/kWh. Gas includes daily fixed charge.

How to pay for it — green finance options
The upfront cost can be high. Here are the main ways you can finance a new heat pump water heater.
Green home loan top-up
Most NZ banks offer green loan products or sustainable home loan top-ups specifically for energy-efficient home upgrades.
Rates are 1–2% lower than standard personal loans. If you have a mortgage, this is usually the cheapest option.
Interest-free or low-interest finance
Some installers offer interest-free payment plans over 12–24 months. Ask your installer about finance options at the quoting stage.

Government grants
There are currently no Government grants for hot water heat pumps in New Zealand. The Warmer Kiwi Homes programme does provide grants for eligible households for space heating heat pumps and insulation if you are doing wider upgrades at the same time.

Things to check
- Get at least two or three quotesPrices can vary significantly between installers. Always compare like-for-like — same brand, same model, and same scope of work. Our installer partners provide transparent, all-inclusive pricing.
- Ask exactly what's includedA good quote should itemise: unit supply, installation labour, electrical work, old unit removal, plumbing, parts and commissioning. If you are using a plumber make sure your quote also includes the electrical work.
- Check warranty terms before choosing on price aloneCylinders and the heat pump unit often have differing warranty terms. These range from 5 to 20 years for cylinders and from 2 to 7 years for the heat pump and compressor. Rheem and Rinnai typically offer 7 year tank warranties and 3 and 5 years respectively for the heat pump component warranties. Many warranties also have shorter terms for labour coverage. It pays to request a full copy of the warranty before making your product choice as many have exemptions and clauses that you should be aware of. A slightly more expensive system with a better warranty may cost much less over its lifetime.
- Don't buy on price alone — check installer credentialsA licensed plumber is legally required for hot water installation in NZ. Check credentials at masterplumbers.org.nz. A poor installation can void your warranty and reduce the system's efficiency and lifespan. Some brand's also require a brand accredited installer for the warranty.
- Consider timing — don't wait for an emergencyIf your current hot water system is over 12 years old, start getting quotes now. Emergency replacements give you no time to compare and you may end up with whatever your plumber prefers to install — and a like for like replacement, rather than a heat pump.
